Graduate student wins award for presentation

WSU Puyallup graduate student Andrea Garfinkel received the award for Best Oral Presentation at the 12th International Symposium on Flower Bulbs and Herbaceous Perennials in Kunming, China.

The conference, which is sponsored by the International Society for Horticultural Science, is held every four years and is attended by researchers from around the world. In late June Andrea accompanied her advisor Gary Chastagner and research technologist Annie Debauw to present their research.

At the conference, Andrea gave a presentation titled, “Identification of Botrytis paeoniae microsatellites to track potential pathogen movement on peony rootstock using Ion Proton technology.” She was surprised to be announced as the winner … » More …

Puyallup Graduate Student Named to CSSA Board

WSU Puyallup would like to congratulate Henry Sintim for being named Interim Graduate Student Representative to the Crop Science Society of America Board of Directors. He will join in on monthly board calls and take part in a strategic planning meeting this month in Madison, Wisconsin. Sintim is a graduate student at the Puyallup Research and Extension Center where he is researching how biodegradable plastic mulches impact soil quality and microclimates. His work could help the specialty crop industry while reducing costs and eliminating plastic waste. We are all proud to have Henry here!

Grad Student Wins Grant A. Harris Research Instrumentation Fellowship

Graduate student David Sullivan was a recent recipient for the Decagon Devices Grant A. Harris Research Instrumentation Fellowship.

The fellowship provides $30,000 worth of Decagon research instruments—$5,000 each—to six graduate students studying environmental or geotechnical science.

David is pursuing his Master’s Degree in Soil Science and started his journey with Puyallup Research & Extension during field season of 2015 with Dr. Doug Collins. » More …

Prof. receives award for outstanding gardening book

Linda Chalker-Scott, professor and faculty at WSU Puyallup, is the recipient of a 2016 American Horticultural Society Book Award for How Plants Work (Timber Press, 2015). Distinguished Student Brings Home Award

Another congratulations is in order for our graduate student Andrea Garfinkel!

Andrea was the recent recipient of the Richard R. and Constance M. Albrecht Fellowship Award given through the WSU Graduate School. The award will not only plump up her resume but also her pocketbook as it comes with a $1,500 scholarship.

The award was open to all active PhD students within the University and Andrea’s application first had to be nominated by the college and then proceed to be selected by the University Selection Committee.

Recent grad published in Academic Journal

Jessi Mullane

Congratulations to our recent graduate Jessica Mullane! Jessi’s paper dealing with her master’s work is now published in the December 2015 edition of the academic journal Science of The Total Environment.

Her paper—Intermittent rainstorms cause pulses of nitrogen, phosphorus, and copper in leachate from compost in bioretention systems—has local ramifications for our stormwater. You may read the paper here.
