WSU Puyallup graduate student Andrea Garfinkel received the award for Best Oral Presentation at the 12th International Symposium on Flower Bulbs and Herbaceous Perennials in Kunming, China.

The conference, which is sponsored by the International Society for Horticultural Science, is held every four years and is attended by researchers from around the world. In late June Andrea accompanied her advisor Gary Chastagner and research technologist Annie Debauw to present their research.

At the conference, Andrea gave a presentation titled, “Identification of Botrytis paeoniae microsatellites to track potential pathogen movement on peony rootstock using Ion Proton technology.” She was surprised to be announced as the winner by Dr. Ding Mu, the convener of the Symposium, and receive a cash prize.

“I was extremely honored to have been presented this title among many deserving scientists from around the world”, said Garfinkel.

Andrea says her time in China will definitely be a memorable trip. WSU Puyallup is proud of Andrea’s hard work and excited to see her continued excellence—both at home and abroad.
