Barri Herman

Barri Herman, Ph.D.

Dr. Herman joined WSU in May of 2011 as Staff Scientist at IBC working on clonal and short rotation forestry. Barri has worked on various pine and pine hybrids, eucalyptus and eucalyptus hybrids, Acacia, alder and poplar species programs in South Africa, Brazil, New Zealand, Australia, Uruguay and Kenya. Barri joined WSU from Weyerhaeuser where he developed a clonal Alder production system for Weyerhaeuser Hardwoods.

His interests revolve around through the system value for processing and biotechnology applications in short rotation hardwood and softwood plantations. His experience in short rotation forestry spans seedling production to paper or lumber production. Barri has a BSc Applied Biology (London Universities NELP) with joint honours in Biochemistry and Physiology, an MSc in pure Biochemistry, specializing in secondary metabolism (University of the Witwatersrand) and a joint Ph.D. in Biochemistry/Physiology where he studied the genetic and environmental control of wood formation.
